Do you work for a “world class” organisation?
We were recently invited to an exciting event called 'Leadership in World Class Manufacturing'.
The blurb promised us that for just £200 +VAT we could achieve our "world class ambitions", "Plan for world class status" and find out about "leadership and the world class organisation". But we won't be attending, notwithstanding the fact that we don’t work in world class manufacturing, and here’s why.
A Google search for 'World Class' and our home county 'Yorkshire' reveals 443,000 pages. World class is coming out of our ears: we've got world class businesses, business leaders, business parks, business intelligence, business solutions, business support services, business schools; not to mention continuity, practices, regeneration strategies, study centres, shopping centres, universities, cities and, of course, manufacturing.
There are only two possible explanations. Either, without realising it, we are in fact living through an economic golden age, surrounded by business geniuses in the world’s greatest economic golden zone, or alternatively every day thousands of press releases are being issued by businesses and organisations who describe themselves as “world class”.
And herein lies the problem. Superlatives like “world class”, “market leading” and the rest, pepper many a company announcement, but they are ultimately empty statements because there’s no benchmark, and people don’t believe them, because they don’t know what they stand for. At MK, we believe that the key to successful business is not about being “world class” but actually about being different.
Successful PR requires effort to make your organisation famous for being different and we can help you become a true market leader by helping you successfully leverage your points of difference. That's why we don't promote 'world class' organisations. If you want to try something different, perhaps you should talk to us: help@mkthingshappen.co.uk
